Kerr-McGee Corp. has announced a gas condensate discovery in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, on the West Boomvang prospect, East Breaks block 642. The discovery, located in 3,500 feet of water, three miles east of the recently announced North Boomvang discovery well, encountered approximately 66 feet of pay. Kerr-McGee Corp. operates this block with a 30 percent interest. Partners are Reading & Bates Development Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of R&B Falcon Corp., 50 percent, and Ocean Energy Inc., 20 percent. R&B Falcon's semi-submersible rig, the C. Kirk Rhein, drilled the West Boomvang discovery well. Kerr-McGee is continuing its evaluation of this area and is currently drilling an appraisal well to test a separate fault block on the North Boomvang prospect. An exploratory well is to be drilled on the East Boomvang prospect at East Breaks 688 as development for this core area nears completion. In addition, the company has been awarded East Breaks blocks 601 and 641 from the Western Gulf of Mexico lease sale, bringing the company's total to nine blocks in the Greater Boomvang and Nansen areas.
