Berends Takes Helm at PetroLatina
Berends was previously CEO for Mercantile International Petroleum, Inc, an oil & gas company with assets in Colombia and Peru. Whilst at Mercantile he transformed the business from debts of US$65 million to having strong cash flows and operating profits. Berends successfully sold Mercantile in a private sale in early 2006.
Between 1997 and 2001, Berends was the President of Preussag Energie Americas, the German oil and gas exploration & production company, where he was responsible for the company's upstream oil & gas activities in Latin America, US and Canada. The company was sold to OMV, Central Europe's largest oil and gas group, in late 2001.
Having started his career as an explorationist with Shell in the early 1970s, Berends has built up over 34 years of experience in the oil & gas industry, 15 of which have been spent in South America.
Berends, a Dutch national, holds a doctoral degree in geophysics and bachelor degrees in geology and finance.
