Peru's state hydrocarbons promotions agency Perupetro was due to launch the tender for the exploration of 18 blocks on January 23, Perupetro said in a statement.

Onshore blocks included in the tender are primarily located in the Maranon and Ucayali basins. Blocks 130, 134, 135, 136 and 137 are in the Maranon basin, while blocks 131, 132, 138 and 139 are in the Ucayali basin, according to a statement from the mines and energy ministry.

Other onshore blocks include block 25 in the Talara basin, block 140 in the Huallaga basin, and block 141 in the Titicaca basin.

Offshore blocks included in the tender are the Salaverry basin's Z-48 and Z-49 blocks, the Trujillo basin's Z-46 and Z-47 blocks as well as block Z-45 in the Talara-Sechura basin.

Bidding rules will be available on the agency's website on January 24.

Perupetro on February 2 in Houston will present studies of 10 blocks conducted by the agency as well as studies of eight blocks conducted by geological consulting firm Gustavson Associates.

The agency will subsequently travel to London for a March 26 presentation before presenting in Calgary, although the date for the latter is still being coordinated.

If all goes smoothly in awarding of the blocks, acquiring permits and carrying out environmental studies, winning bidders could begin exploration on the blocks at the beginning of 2008, BNamericas previously reported.

"I think that this year there will be more positive announcements of discoveries and I think more contracts will be signed, and perhaps under better conditions than those that have been signed until now," Perupetro's president Daniel Saba told BNamericas.
