The new 2-500 ton Independence drilling barge, the first of its kind to be built in the United States since 1981, was recently completed in the Port of Iberia for Axxis Drilling LLC. The 210-foot long, 54-foot wide vessel, designed for shallow water drilling, immediately left for Lake Hatch to begin drilling operations.

IDM Equipment of Houston played a major role in the construction of the new 210-foot vessel, including designing and building the drilling machinery, the power control systems and the instrumentation. The latter incorporated a number of technological innovations, including analog and digital electronics that allows real time reports of the well's progress. Other innovations and enhanced design features incorporated into the rig include a design that prevents waste liquids from spilling over the sides, circular vats for mixing mud and expanded living quarters.

President of Axxis Drilling, Bob Dunn, praised the high quality of the work performed by IDM Equipment, the company’s care and dedication to the job and the willingness to "go the extra mile."
