BG Awards Contract for Work on the Miskar Field Offshore Tunisia

BG Group

BG Tunisia has awarded a major contract for the installation of a compression package on the offshore Miskar gas field to Bechtel Inc.

The US$70 million project will involve modifications to the Miskar platform and installation of a single 20 megawatts gas turbine-driven compressor, to be operational in 2004. This is to allow the production plateau of the field to be maintained for up to an additional five years and to boost the total recovery of gas from the field. Under a long-term gas sales contract BG Tunisia supplies over 205 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to Société Tunisienne de l'Électricité et du Gaz (STEG), Tunisia's state electricity and gas company.

Bechtel has contracted Siemens Demag Delaval Turbomachinery Limited to begin manufacture of the compressor package with Rolls Royce Energy Systems supplying the gas turbine.

The compression package and associated facilities will be housed in a 1,600 ton module, which will be installed in a single lift onto the top deck of the Miskar platform. Construction of the module is planned to begin in March 2003.

Martin Houston, Executive Vice President, BG Group, said: "This major contract award is a significant step in the longevity of the Miskar gas field. The compression project, in parallel with our current drilling program on Miskar, seeks to maximize the production of indigenous reserves in co-operation with the Tunisian Government. It has been six years since BG Tunisia produced first gas from the field and these measures further underpin our commitment to offshore development and the country's energy sector."
