E.ON Acquires Stake in UK North Sea Exploration Blocks

E.ON Ruhrgas UK North Sea Ltd has acquired equity in five exploration blocks in the northern part of the UK North Sea located some 200 and 400 km off the coast of Aberdeen. Several exploration wells will be drilled in these blocks over the next two years to explore for gas reserves.

"We are very pleased to have secured these gas exploration opportunities" said Frank Sivertsen, Managing Director of E.ON Ruhrgas UK North Sea. "These deals, all focused gas exploration, demonstrate our continued commitment to building our upstream gas business in the UK, thereby contributing to supply security."

The company has signed farm-in deals to acquire interests in the following exploration blocks in 2006:

  • 25% in block 9/4a from operator Apache North Sea,
  • 25% each in blocks 22/14b and 22/19b from operator Carrizo Oil & Gas,
  • 20% each in blocks 22/27a and 29/2a from operator CNR International (UK).

E.ON Ruhrgas UK North Sea operates the Johnston and Hunter gas fields. In September, the company announced the successful appraisal of its Babbage gas field in the Southern Gas Basin in the UK North Sea. Apart from the interests held in the UK North Sea, E.ON Ruhrgas also has stakes in Norwegian gas fields.
