United Marine Completes Repairs on TODCO Unit
United Marine Shipyard has completed a contract to refurbish the jackup, THE 185. The rig, owned by Houston-based THE Offshore Drilling Company (TODCO), is currently being mobilized to Angola.
THE 185 is a 120-foot water depth mat-supported jackup unit with a cantilevered platform. The 2-month refurbishment project included steel and pipe renewal on the rig and general recommissioning work.
"We are pleased to take part in the reactivation of the TODCO unit," said A.B. Bernard, UMS General Manager, "We are very enthusiastic about the upturn in the offshore industry, which has been very suppressed the last few years."
"It's all about timing in this business," Mr. Bernard commented, "We have geared up for this jump in rig utilization and plan to play a major role in this viable market."
The Gulf Coast-based yard specializes in rig repairs, conversions and new construction. With their new jackup design, the UM 250, UMS hopes to fill needs of drillers looking to update or increase their rig fleet. The mat-supported offshore unit incorporates upgrades and larger drilling variable load capacities into a basic design proven with four decades of service.
