J. Ray McDermott Wins International Safety Award

Four years and 5.7 million man-hours incident free - safety success is celebrated for J. Ray's excellent performance on ExxonMobil projects in the Arabian Gulf.

J. Ray McDermott's Middle East fabrication operation has just won ExxonMobil Development Company's prestigious Contractor of the Year Award for 2004, in recognition of the company's excellent safety performance working on the RasGas Offshore Expansion Projects, and Qatargas Projects, for which ExxonMobil is one of the major shareholders.

Bob Deason, president, J. Ray McDermott, S.A. had the honor of leading the team receiving the award in Houston, "Nothing that I have done since joining this company has made me prouder," he said. "This is truly an outstanding achievement."

Nominees are thoroughly vetted by a team of senior ExxonMobil personnel and safety professionals, and the successful contractor must display outstanding safety statistics, and clearly demonstrate a cultural and behavioral approach to zero accidents.

Stewart Mitchell, J. Ray's project manager for RasGas Projects and Guy McLear, J. Ray's Jebel Ali fabrication operations safety manager flew to Houston to be present for the awards.

"Winning this award is like winning the World Cup, in terms of industry prestige," said Mitchell. "It is a great honor to be recognized by ExxonMobil for our company's safety performance at Jebel Ali, and is a testament to the efforts and hard work of our respective management teams in developing the programs and the culture which have resulted in this achievement."

The award focuses on the safety management, implementation and performance of ExxonMobil's contractors, worldwide and the Jebel Ali facility met all the criteria of the exhaustive evaluation.

In terms of project safety statistics, the end of April saw J. Ray complete four years and 5.4 million man-hours on the RasGas Offshore Expansion Project without a Lost Time Incident (LTI); and one year LTI free, since the start of the Qatargas project.

J. Ray has worked hard to implement the safety guidelines in its Jebel Ali yard, which are based around ISO9000 and OSHAS 18001 standards.

"This is the second award we've received for the RasGas Offshore Expansion Projects in less than six months," said Mitchell. "The first being the regional Excellence in Energy Award for Project Management of RasGas Projects by Pipeline magazine; we hope to maintain safety awareness and perform with due diligence to the end of the project".
