Petronas Makes Malaysia's First Basement Oil Discovery

Petronas

Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd has discovered oil in the basement of an exploration well drilled within the Southern Malay Basin offshore Terengganu, the first of such discovery in Malaysia.

The Anding Utara-1 exploration well and its sidetrack were drilled recently and both tested oil and gas in the basement, the bottom layer of a hydrocarbon prospect usually devoid of any potential. The well was drilled by the Ensco 52.

The Anding Utara-1 well was drilled to a total depth of 2,610 meters, including 120 meters of vertical depth into the basement. The sidetrack well reached a total depth of 2,740 meters, including 250 meters of penetration into the basement. Anding Utara is located within the Malong-Sotong-Anding Production Sub-block of Block PM12.

Petronas Carigali has completed conventional testing of the wells and is evaluating the potential of this discovery.
