QSERV Wins Major Pipeline Pre-Commissioning Project

Qserv has been awarded a substantial six-figure sum pre-commissioning and testing contract for the Aberdeen to Lochside gas pipeline project being constructed by Entrepose Industrial Services on behalf of National Grid Transco. The project is the largest gas pipeline under construction in Scotland and is scheduled for completion in October. It involves Qserv swabbing, gauging, flooding, hydrostatically testing, conducting a geometric survey and pre-commissioning 50 kilometers of pipeline from Lochside, ten kilometers north of Montrose to Aberdeen's gas compressor station at Garlogie. The steel pipe, which measures 48 inches in diameter, is the largest diameter pipe used in the UK by National Grid Transco for gas transportation. Qserv is responsible for carrying out all pre-commissioning activities on the pipeline, including integrity testing, before the pipeline goes into service.

Due to the topography along the pipeline route, operations are carried out on 22 separate sections using a comprehensive range of specialist equipment and personnel. More than 25 kilometers of the pipeline have already been successfully tested. Once complete, the pipeline will transport gas from Aberdeen to southern Scotland, England and Wales and is part of National Grid Transco's ongoing investment in the UK's gas transmission system to help meet increased demand for gas.

There are several challenges to this project, which are being successfully addressed by Qserv, Entrepose and National Grid Transco. These include testing a pipeline that undulates up to 240 meters above sea level and crosses 123 major utility services, 60 watercourses, 25 roads, 8 rivers and the East Coast Mainline railway.

Alan Porterfield is general manager of the Pipeline and Process division and joined Qserv in January with more than 25 years' engineering experience. He said: "This is not the first time that we have worked with Entrepose and National Grid Transco and we look forward to continuing our relationship with them.

"By ensuring we have a competent and motivated team with the right attitude towards safety and operational requirements, I am confident that we can meet and exceed our clients' expectations and continue to demonstrate that we are the market leader in the provision of pipeline services.

"Over the next three to four years there is great potential in the UK onshore pipeline market and we aim to develop this, along with our European and international presence."

Health, safety, quality and the environment are the main drivers in the Qserv business, as Alan explains: "Exceptional operational and safety performance are crucial to efficient and productive customer relations. Since our creation in November 2001 we've had zero lost time injuries and we seek to maintain this exceptional record. "In our first year of business we gained a number of HSEQ achievements including QMS.ISO 9001-2000, EMS.ISO 14001 and SMS.OHSAS 18001 & SCC certification and this certainly sets us apart from our competitors."
