TECH SHOWCASE: Worldwide Asset Tracker
Telematics device designed to track frac tanks, construction equipment and other assets.

The commercial telematics firm SkyBitz has unveiled a two-way global satellite communication and tracking device for oil and gas assets – the Galaxy GTP4050.

"It is largely intended for onshore and offshore oil and gas companies, and the other companies that support them, delivering actionable data that can optimize operations within oil and gas, chemical, transportation and intermodal industries," Henry Popplewell, SkyBitz's president, told Rigzone.

According to Popplewell, the device can track the location of assets in hazardous locations (HAZLOC) – near ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or liquids – or with hazardous materials (HAZMAT) shipments. In fact, the company reports the GTP4050 is the world's only two-way communication product bearing the IECEx, ATEX Zone 0 and UL913 certifications, making it intrinsically safe for HAZLOC and HAZMAT.

Popplewell explained that the tracking device, which uses a multi-year battery, can be installed on various types of assets in less than 10 minutes. He added that it reports location, time and movement data – via the Iridium satellite network – at regular scheduled intervals or as moving.

The company says the technology is designed to be mounted on assets such as:

  • Cargo carrying units (CCU)
  • Baskets
  • Tanks
  • Frac tanks
  • Tankers
  • Flatbeds and chassis
  • Containers
  • Construction equipment
  • Dry van trailers

"SkyBitz is able to deliver powerful data analytics to tell when an asset is moved, maximize utilization, keep track of mileage traveled and know when equipment is on rent or idle," said Popplewell.
