Woodside Petroleum Discovers Gas Offshore Myanmar
Woodside Petroleum Ltd has discovered gas at the Shwe Yee Htun-1 exploration well in Block A-6 in the Rakhine Basin, located in the western offshore area of Myanmar.
The well intersected a gross gas column of approximately 423 feet and approximately 49 feet of net gas pay is interpreted within the primary target interval, according to a company statement. Spudded November 27, 2015, the well saw the conclusion of wireline logging operations December 29, 2015.
Woodside CEO Peter Coleman said he was pleased by the successful evaluation of the prospect, which provided evidence of a working petroleum system in the Rakhine Basin deep water.
Commenting on the latest development, Coleman said in a company statement:
“Further analysis will be undertaken to understand the full potential of the play, but this de-risks a number of leads which will now be matured.
“This discovery is an encouraging outcome for future exploration and appraisal activity in the area.”
Woodside has interests in Blocks A-6, AD-7, A-7, AD-5, A-4 and AD-2 in Myanmar. These six permits represent 20 percent of Woodside’s global exploration acreage.
