Accenture: Technology Uptake Important for Australian LNG Competitiveness
“It is wide ranging area for them and they all have slightly different priorities because the industry is going through a tough time. This isn’t just in oil and gas (in Australia), but in other sectors like mining as well,” he said.
“They are looking for new technologies that will help them with their productivity, cost effectiveness as well.”
However, Carthy warned that some companies were still not ready for the transition into a digital age and were risking being left behind in a market demanding technological innovation.
“Some companies are trialling this, some have gone further and implemented projects, like Woodside, while others are still thinking about it,” Carthy explained.
“There’s quite a range across the clients we work with and the range they are at across their life cycles, whether they are an operating company or in the first stages of building capital projects.”
Majors Seek Advantages
Like Woodside, oil and gas companies Chevron Corp. and Santos Ltd. are turning more to technology in Australia to provide competitive advantages at LNG operations.
Service provider GE Oil & Gas is working with both companies, most recently signing an agreement with Chevron that will focus on using technology to deliver improved project management and maintenance services.
Lorenzo Simonelli, GE Oil & Gas President and CEO, said most oil and gas companies were looking for fresh ways to tackle current challenges, and many were turning to technology.
“Given the current strong headwinds facing the industry, the sector, and the world, is crying out for innovative solutions to extracting, transporting and processing oil and gas,” Simonelli said.
“The needs are multiple and competing: faster, cheaper, local, predictable, more efficient, less resource intensive.”
GE Oil & Gas works with Santos in Queensland to improve the efficiency and productivity of its Gladstone LNG project, which shipped its first cargo this month.
