Siemens PLM Software Offers Solutions to Asia Pacific Yards, Regional Views
In terms of savings, SPLM estimated that shipyards utilizing its software solutions could reduce the time and cost needed to complete a project by an average of 10 to 20 percent.
“We have seen easily 10 to 20 percent reduction in out of door schedule, same 10 to 15 percent reduction in cost. So these are the kind of numbers that clients are looking for,” Peters pointed out.
SPLM’s Outlook on Regional Offshore Sector
Within Southeast Asia, Singapore’s offshore sector looks the most promising given its strong order books, while the prospects for the rest of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asia Nations) appear rather mixed. Malaysia, which has positioned itself as a hub for petroleum services in Southeast Asia, and Indonesia, whose offshore sector has experienced slower growth recently, needed to do more to improve their competitiveness, Ghatikar noted.
Vietnam, which has been trying to carve a niche in this market, is not a direct business threat to Singapore at the moment as it is still a relatively small, albeit an emerging, player in the offshore market in Southeast Asia, Ghatikar added.
Still, Singapore, despite its dominance in the regional offshore marine market, is not taking these business rivals lightly.
“Singapore realized a lot of the work that it could get might actually go to them in the future,” Ghatikar observed.
Turning to the larger Asia Pacific market, the offshore industry has focused recently on the competition between Singapore and China, especially in rig building. After all, Chinese yards had overtaken Singapore in terms of newbuild jackup orders since 2013. The trend continues into 2014, with China awarded building contracts for 10 jackups compared to seven for Singapore, according to Rigzone’s RigLogix database.
