KCA Deutag Wins Contract for Work in Libya

KCA Deutag has been awarded an additional one-year contract, plus a further one year extension, for rig T-72 in Libya valued at approximately US $11.2 million over two years.

The client, Wintershall Libya, awarded the contract extension after the completion of the initial one year contract in which several milestones were achieved.

The upgrade of the equipment was carried out in a timely fashion and within budget during the rig move after drilling the initial well. This consisted of the installation of an independent electric-driven rotary table and upgrade to the shearing capabilities of the blow out preventers.

"Our safety record was excellent," commented Dave Jones, country manager for Libya. "We carried out all operations over the one-year period without a single lost time incident."

At the same time, KCA Deutag's mobilization and rig up enabled the initial spud in seven days ahead of the target. "We successfully drilled four wells, ranging from 13,000 – 15,000 ft, in the Nakhla and Hamid fields, approximately 1200 kilometers east of Tripoli," said Jones. "The rig operated throughout the entire year with an impressive 99.74% uptime."

T-72 will continue to drill wells in the same Nakhla and Hamid fields during the one-year extension. Rig T-72 is a 2000 HP rig with 1600 HP pumps complete with an independent 100 man camp.

Claus Chur, Group Director Land Division of KCA Deutag said; "Libya is a key focus for our future development and with over 40 years experience in country we are well-placed to capitalize on opportunities as restrictions are relaxed."

KCA Deutag has five rigs in the country for clients Wintershall, Agip and WAHA.
