Ireland to Hold Rockall Basin Licensing Round

Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr. John Browne, T.D., has announced a Petroleum Exploration Licensing Round in the Rockall Basin with a closing date of March 31, 2005.

The Minister stated: 'I am aware of industry interest in this area and I am also conscious that the exploration sector needs clear, early signals as to future exploration rounds. I intend to offer some 60 to 70 blocks for licensing in the north eastern part of the basin.'

Minister Browne stated that over the coming months his staff will:

  • consult widely with the offshore sector including IOOA and many of the 'new independents' active in northwest Europe;
  • consult with the geological and seismic companies in relation to the availability and provision of data and technical studies;
  • host an 'event' in late June/early July 2004 which will focus primarily on future exploration opportunities in Ireland.

  • The Minister concluded "I will be making further announcements over the next few months in relation to this round. Future announcements will include hard details of blocks to be licensed and the terms of licences that will be offered.'
