Monday, May 24, 2004
A man died when he fell through the grating on an oil platform five miles south of Dauphin Island off the Alabama coast on Sunday, according to the Coast Guard.
The man, who was installing some equipment, fell about 40 feet and landed on one of the support beams of a platform located on Mobile Block 113, said Petty Officer John Lolley. The man's name and the company he worked for were not released pending notification of his family.
He was recovered from the water and brought to Dauphin Island, when the Coast Guard was notified about the accident at 12:40 p.m., Lolley said. The exact time of the accident was not available.
It appeared the impact from the fall caused his death, Lolley said. The Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Mobile is investigating the accident.
