Oil Field Wellhead Explosion in West Texas

An explosion in a West Texas oil field near the border with New Mexico left at least two dead and nine injured Wednesday morning, the Associated Press said. The workers were changing a wellhead when the buildup of pressure caused the explosion.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene some 60 miles southeast of Carlsbad, New Mexico. Broken cellphone and radio connections in the rural area have slowed updates on the explosion.

Sheriff Billy Hopper in Loving County, Texas said that the extent of the injuries of the workers was unknown, as was the name of the company operating the oil field. The area where the explosion occurred is owned by RKI Exploration and Production, according to KWES TV in Odessa.
