ONGC Appoints Tapas Kumar Sengupta as Director (Offshore)

India's state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) announced Sunday that the company has appointed Tapas Kumar Sengupta as its Director (Offshore) from Feb. 1, succeeding P K Borthakur.

“In the current era of difficult oil, we need to make concerted efforts and catalyze meaningful and pro-business efforts to have a 360 degree approach to augment productivity of our offshore assets,” Sengupta said in a company statement on his new appointment.

Sengupta has experience as a production engineer in both onshore and offshore oilfields operation. His onshore experience included 11 years in well services in Gujarat and Assam in India. He also worked for ONGC's upstream subsidiary ONGC Videsh in Sudan as General Manager in the Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company.

He has an 18 year-old stint in offshore fields off Mumbai in India, 12 of which were in Mumbai High in well services. Sengupta was project coordinator for New Technology jobs like Water Shut-Off & Gas Shut-Off in difficult wells of Mumbai High in 1992-94 and was instrumental in improving performances of ONGC’s offshore sick well inventory.

Sengupta graduated from Jadavpur University in Calcutta, India with a first-class chemical engineering degree and also has a Diploma in Management from Indira Gandhi National Open University.
