BOEM Seeks More Information Shell Chukchi Plans
On Nov. 6, Shell submitted a revised version of its Chukchi Sea exploration plan to BOEM so the company could finish drilling the Burger A well to total depth before moving on to other previously approved drilling locations. Shell started drilling the Burger A well during its 2012 exploration drilling season.
On Nov. 26 of last year, BOEM’s Alaska OCS region received Shell’s 2014 integrated operations plans for the Chukchi Sea. This plan was submitted in response to recommendations made in the Department of the Interior’s March 2013 report Review of Shell’s 2012 Alaska Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration Program.
On Nov. 29, BOEM’s Alaska Outer Continental Shelf office sent a request for additional information to Shell; the bureau said it needed the information to formally “deem submitted” Shell’s revised Chukchi Sea plan.
A Shell spokesperson told Rigzone that the company continues to take a methodical approach to this exploration phase, and will only proceed if the company’s program meets the high standards that Shell applies to its global operations.
“If, at any time, we feel we’re not ready to carry out a safe, successful drilling program, we will pause,” spokesperson Curtis Smith commented. “At this stage, we are communicating with the relevant agencies, but we have not finalized the timing for our next operations.”
