Senex Energy Unveils Latest Cooper Basin Discovery

Australia’s Senex Energy Ltd. has reported a new oil discovery in the Patchawarra Formation at the Worrior oil field in the Cooper Basin of South Australia.

The southern Cooper Basin permit is a joint venture between operator Senex (70 percent) and Cooper Energy Ltd. (30 percent).

Brisbane-based Senex flowed 700,000 standard cubic feet of gas and 670 barrels of oil per day during production testing of the Patchawarra Formation in the Worrior-8 well, it said in a statement.

The company reported that analysis and interpretation of data received identified the reservoir most likely contained an oil leg to a gas reservoir, adding that reinterpretation of previous Worrior wells indicated the Patchawarra accumulation may extend across the entire field area.

Ian Davies, managing director of Senex, said the results vindicated the company’s approach to in-field development by applying “fresh eyes to existing oil fields”.

“This is the first time that crude has been produced from the Patchawarra Formation at Worrior oil field, where oil has historically been produced from the McKinlay Member, Birkhead Formation and Hutton Sandstone,” Davies said.

The Worrior-8 development was drilled to a depth of 5,833 feet (1,778 meters) in June and intersected 59 feet (18 meters) of net pay across the McKinlay Member, Namur Sandstone and Patchawarra Formation.

In October, Senex completed the well to allow for flow testing from the Patchawarra Formation as information from Worrior-1 and petrophysical analysis, as well as good oil and gas shows, in Worrior-8 had indicated the formation was potentially gas bearing.

Production testing of Worrior-8 started in mid-November and the well is currently shut in for pressure build-up testing.

The discovery follows an announcement from Senex earlier this week that its Burruna-3 appraisal had intersected a new oil horizon at the Burruna oil field in the Cooper Basin.
