Statoil Delineation Wells Come up Dry
The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate reported Friday that Statoil has completed the drilling of wells 15/9-F-1 and 15/9-F-1 A on the Volve field in the central North Sea. Both wells have been classified as 'dry'.
The wells' purpose was to determine if there were more resources in the Volve field by proving petroleum in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks in the northwestern part of the field. Well 15/9-F-1 did not encounter the Hugin formation as expected, but instead it found the Smith Bank formation in the Triassic layer due to a fault in the rock.
Sidetrack well 15/9-F-1 A was then drilled and this well encountered the Hugin formation with a reservoir thickness of approximately 154 feet, but with poorer-than-anticipated reservoir quality.
Data was collected from the wells, which have now been permanently plugged and abandoned.
