Lundin Spuds Second Well in Two Days

Sweden's Lundin Petroleum announced Tuesday that it had spud appraisal well 16/3-7 on the giant Johan Sverdrup discovery in the Norwegian North Sea. The well is the second to be spud by Lundin in two days after it announced Monday that it had spud well 16/2-20S on the Torvastad prospect – north of Johan Sverdrup.

The latest well, also located on production license 501 where Lundin is the operator, has the objective of establishing the depth, quality and thickness of Jurassic reservoir sequences. These sequences lie approximately 2.5 miles southwest of exploration well 16/3-2 (which was drilled just outside of the Johan Sverdrup discovery in 1976) and two miles southeast of the recent successful appraisal well 16/3-5.

Lundin hopes the 16/3-7 well will provide important information relating to the upcoming development of the Johan Sverdrup discovery. This information should reduce the uncertainty related to the field outline, reservoir thickness and quality as well as determining the oil-water contact.

On Monday the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate reported that appraisal well 16/5-4 on the Johan Sverdrup discovery had shown the reservoir to be thinner than expected.
