Wintershall Makes Gas/Condensate Find in Norwegian Sea
Wintershall Norge AS, operator of production license 475, has completed drilling of wildcat well 6407/1-6 S. The well was drilled about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) northeast of the Tyrihans field and 5 miles (8 kilometers) southeast of the 6406/3-8 oil/gas discovery.
The primary exploration target for the well was to prove petroleum in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks (the Garn and Ile formations). The secondary exploration target was to prove petroleum in reservoir rocks in Lower Cretaceous (the Lange formation).
Aquiferous reservoirs with gross vertical thicknesses of 387 and 404 feet (118 and 123 meters), respectively, were encountered in the Garn and Ile formations with reservoir quality as expected. Gas/condensate was proven in three thin sandstone intervals with a total net vertical thickness of 30 feet (9 meters) in the Lange formation, and with a gross reservoir thickness of 171 feet (52 meters). Preliminary calculations of the size of the discovery are between 3 and 20 million Sm3 recoverable oil equivalents. The licensees will consider the discovery together with nearby discoveries.
The well was not formation tested, but data has been acquired and samples have been taken. This is the first exploration well in production license 475. The license was awarded Feb. 29, 2008 (APA 2007).
The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 13,287 feet (4,050 meters) and a total measured depth of 13,944 feet (4,250 meters) below the sea surface. It was terminated in the Ror formation from the Lower Jurassic Age. Water depth is 955 feet (291 meters). The well has been permanently plugged and abandoned.
Well 6407/1-6 S was drilled by the drilling facility Transocean Arctic (mid-water semisub), which will now proceed to production license 418 in the northern part of the North Sea to drill appraisal well 35/9-8, where Wintershall Norge AS is the operator.
