Total Begins Production from Amenam/Kpono Fiel

Elf Petroleum Nigeria, a unit of Total SA, Tuesday will officially open the deep offshore Amenam/Kpono oil field, a company spokesman told Dow Jones Newswires.

The $1.4 billion Amenam/Kpono field, located 40 kilometers offshore, has reserves of 600 million barrels of crude, with planned production of 125,000 barrels a day.

Elf's crude oil production is between 275,000 b/d and 300,000 b/d, but officials said this would rise to about 600,000 b/d in five years.

The expected increase will come from other deep offshore fields being developed by Elf. These include Akpo field located in Oil Prospecting Lease 246, and USAN field in OPL 222, where there have been significant exploration and appraisal successes.

Elf also supplies 23.33% of the gas utilized by Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Co. located on Bonny Island in eastern Niger Delta.

A second phase of Amenam/Kpono field is underway, aimed at gathering the gas associated with the oil for delivery to the Nigeria LNG plant.
