Anadarko Scores Another Drilling Success in Mozambique

Anadarko Petroleum Corporation has scored another success in the Rovuma Basin, offshore Mozambique, with a new gas find at its Barquentine-4 appraisal well.

The Barquentine-4 well – located approximately 19 miles north of the Lagosta discovery well at the southern end of the Windjammer/Lagosta/Barquentine/Camarao gas complex – encountered 525 net feet of natural gas pay. This is Anadarko's ninth successful well in the complex, which is part of the larger Prosperidade complex that is estimated to hold recoverable resources of between 17 and 30 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Anadarko, the operator, holds a 36.5-percent interest in the 2.6 million-acre Rovuma Basin Area 1 block, while partners Mitsui E&P Mozambique Area 1, BPRL Ventures Mozambique, Videocon Mozambique Rovuma 1 and Cove Energy hold 20 percent, 10 percent, 10 percent and 8.5 percent respectively.

"Our appraisal drilling program in the Prosperidade complex offshore Mozambique delivered outstanding results that provide significant confidence in the vast extent of this accumulation and will be key in achieving third-party reserve certification, as we advance the partnership's world-class LNG (liquefied natural gas) project toward FID (final investment decision)," said Bob Daniels, Anadarko's senior vice president for Worldwide Exploration.

The CEO of Cove Energy, the London-quoted explorer which is currently the target in a takeover battle between PTTEP and Shell, added that the latest success "bookended" more than 19 miles of proven gas fairway between Barquentine-4 and Lagosta to the south.

"We can now look forward to new high impact exploration drilling in the northern section of the prolific Area 1 Rovuma Offshore block whilst at the same time continuing the well flow testing programme," said John Craven.
