Continental Resources' Hamm Joins Romney Campaign

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced Thursday Harold Hamm, founder and CEO ofContinental Resources, will serve as chairman of Romney's Energy Policy Advisory Group.

Hamm will work in the campaign to assemble a broader policy team and develop a comprehensive national energy policy that "creates jobs, protects the environement, and guarantees a reliable, affordable supply of energy to the American economy and to American families," according to a Romney campaign press release.

"I am proud to support Mitt because I believe he is the only candidate with the private sector experience that we so desperately need in Washington," said Hamm at an event at Wrigley Mechanical in Fargo, ND. "As a businessman myself, I am acutely aware of how the Obama Administration has hurt the efforts of entrepreneurs and innovators, and how outrageously he has attacked energy producers in particular. Mitt’s goal of cheap, plentiful energy for the American economy offers the American people a stark alternative to President Obama’s goal of driving prices higher."

Hamm started his oil and gas career as an oil truck operator when he was 18. Four years later in 1967, he founded Continental Resources, which has grown into one of the nation's largest independent energy companies.

Continental Resources is most recently known for its work in North Dakota's Bakken formation, from which the company produces more than 80,000 barrels of domestic oil each day in regions that were believed to contain no oil reserves only a few years ago.

Hamms comments fit well with the Republican narrative that Obamas "goal" is increasing energy prices. This is an assertion that is totally divorced from the facts. In fact, since Obama was elected President, US energy production is significantly higher than it was under George Bush. The Obama administration has very little influence on global energy prices. Given rising global energy demand, tensions in the Middle East and speculation in energy futures, "cheap" energy is a relic of the past. If not for higher energy prices companies like Continental would not even be drilling in areas like the Williston Basin. What Hamm, Romney and their cronies really want is to free oil and gas companies from any regulation.
