HS&E is one of the fastest growing career paths in the oil and gas industry right now. It is not the most insecure position out there! If someone gets hurt and you have done your homework as a safety professional and ensured all appropriate procedures were in place or are in the process of being implemented and you have proof of this...that is what companies want! Common sense is not so common anymore

This industry demands a team effort. Its difficult to determine which jobs are more important than the other. Saying that, I feel the person with both experience and education carry the most responsibility. "Degree Required" means you're highly trainable and most likely a "Self Starter". Thirty years experience means you're very successful. Any employer would pay top dollar for that.

In the continental US and the Gulf of Mexico, none of these jobs would be necessary without the LANDMAN.

Quite right. HSE is the most insecure position - if something goes wrong, you're the first to be fired.

I would have to agree with Ian Hannay to a point, but what about the maintenance crew? You can't do anything on the rig floor if we dont keep the "lights on" :-) As a matter of fact, Geoligists wouldn't be needed either ha ha.

HSE? What about the poor suckers who drill the holes? Drillers, Toolpushers and their ilk. None of the job categories you mention would exist without the Drillers.

I think that some of the hardest jobs are from us Geologist. We have to know the formations and what we see once we have drilled them and what is in the rock.

I think some jobs say "degree required" and it is nothing but a fence to keep the good ole boy rednecks from applying for a job that they are way more qualified to perform. The college person with that piece of paper will get the job and in the end some person with no degree has to teach them how to perform the job. Whatever happened to common sense or is a degree required for that too............
