Deepwater Liberian Well Disappointing & Promising

While Tullow's exploration well produced a non-commercial discovery offshore Liberia, company officials said Thursday what they did find shows promise for future exploration in the Liberian basin.

The main exploration target at the Anadarko-operated Montserrado-1 exploration well -- located in Block LB-15 and drilled to a depth of 17,717 feet -- showed good-quality, water-bearing sands. A secondary target showed approximately 8 meters of hydrocarbon pay and a sample of light oil.

Tullow said the well would now be plugged and abandoned, and the Discover Spirit drillship will move to Sierra Leone for appraisal and exploration work on block SL-07B-11.

"Whilst this wildcat well made a sub-commercial discovery at this location, we have gained critical insights which we will now integrate with our extensive 3D seismic data for follow-up drilling in our highly prospective Liberian acreage," said Angus McCoss, Exploration Director. "We now look forward to the drilling of the high-impact Jupiter and Mercury-2 wells in Sierra Leone."

Tullow has a 25 percent interest in three of Anadarko's exploration blocks offshore Liberia: LB-15, LB-16 and LB-17.
