Cognity Garners New Business
Aberdeen based Cognity, an independent engineering consultancy to the international oil and gas industry, has secured almost half a million pounds of new business within the last month. These contracts will see the provision of specialist mechanical design and advanced analysis to Castle Rock Engineering Ltd, Geoprober Drilling and MPO (Managed Pressure Operations).
The Castle Rock contract win is the second major project that Cognity has been awarded by the firm. Cognity will provide specialist mechanical design and manufacturing support for the second phase of development for a steerable drilling conductor to be used in the Caspian Sea.
Rae Younger, Managing Director of Cognity, says, "These significant contract wins mark a positive start to the company, which has now secured almost £1 million worth of business since inception last summer. The fact this is the second project to be awarded by Castle Rock is testament to the high level of technical expertise that we bring to the table.
"The techniques and technologies we utilize are at the forefront of the industry. We look forward to working with our clients both as an extension to their in-house engineering teams as well as taking sole ownership of projects to develop cutting edge solutions which will go on to shape the future of the oil and gas industry."
In phase one of the Castle Rock project, by utilizing ANSYS simulation and prototyping software, Cognity developed a concept for the accurate placement of the conductor casing 75% faster and more cost effectively than conventional design methods.
The scope of work for phase two includes design optimization along with manufacturing support and prototype testing of the steerable drilling conductor. Cognity will also be required to design the installation aids, test frames and transportation equipment needed to successfully assess the tool before land trials next year.
Bill Wenande, Technical Director at Castle Rock says, "Cognity developed an outstanding and robust design for our steerable drilling conductor which incorporates several innovative features. With their proven engineering acumen they were the obvious choice for taking the design to the next phase".
The other contracts awarded include two projects for MPO, specialists in managed pressure drilling and continuous circulating systems. Cognity will undertake detailed design and analysis for new technology currently being developed by MPO.
Cognity has also been contracted by Geoprober Drilling to undertake detailed finite element analysis and mechanical design for the development of the Geoprober Drill-In Wellhead System (GEO-DWS). This includes the design of a pressure retaining device and a lock ring mechanism, as well as a detailed analysis on optimizing fatigue performance on the newly designed wellhead. The analysis will play a pivotal role in ensuring the lock ring mechanism will disengage and generate the required preload before a working prototype is trialed. This project will involve Cognity applying a new wellhead fatigue method statement to a live job for the first time.
Aberdeen based Cognity offers specialist mechanical design and advanced analysis using cutting-edge ANSYS engineering simulation software, as well as delivering structural design and draughting services.
