First Riser Tower Installed At Girassol Offshore Angola
Alto Mar Girassol, Bouygues Offshore and Stolt Offshore joint venture, has successfully completed the installation of the first riser tower on the Girassol field.
This important milestone has been achieved within the framework of the turnkey contract awarded by TotalFinaElf. This operation represented a major technological challenge with this achievement being a world first in the development of deep water hydrocarbon fields. The riser tower, a 1,300-meter-long bundle, was transported to the location by sub-surface tow, then tilted into the upright position. The tower was further connected to its anchored base, while awaiting to be connected to the Girassol FPSO, which is currently the world's largest floating production, storage and offloading unit. Installation of the two remaining towers will take place in the near future.
The FPSO, built by the Bouygues Offshore and Stolt Offshore Mar Profundo Girassol (MPG) joint venture, left South Korea on March 30th and is expected to arrive early July at the Girassol field. The Girassol field is located offshore Angola in Block 17. Sonangol is concessionary of this block which is operated by TotalFinaElf with a 40 percent interest, Exxon Mobil hold 20 percent, BP holds 16.67 percent, Statoil holds 13.33 perent and Norsk Hydro has the remaining 10 percent.
