Statoil Drills Dry Well in Barents Sea

Statoil Petroleum has drilled a duster in exploratory well 7119/12-4 on the Krykkje prospect in the Barents Sea. The objective of the well was to prove petroleum in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks in the Sto formation.

The Snadd formation from the Late Triassic age was the secondary exploration target, but was not reached. Reservoir rocks of good quality were encountered in the Sto formation, but the well is dry. The well reached a vertical depth of 9,472 feet (2,887 meters) and terminated 492 feet (150 meters) into the Fruholmen formation in the Upper Triassic.

Well 7119/12-4 was drilled by the Polar Pioneer semisub in a water depth of 623 feet (190 meters). Statoil serves as the operator, holding a 33.53% interest; Petoro holds 30%; Total holds 18.4%; GDF Suez holds 12%; Hess holds 3.26%; and RWE Dea holds 2.81%.
