Origin Spuds Tarapunga Well Offshore New Zealand
Origin Energy has commenced exploratory drilling at the Tarapunga-1 well using the Kan Tan IV semisub. The planned total depth of the vertical well is 3,248 feet (990 m) RT and the primary objectives are the Pliocene age sandstones of the Mangaa formation. Tarapunga will be plugged and abandoned after the evaluation program is completed. Tarapunga is the second of a two well exploration program in New Zealand permit area PEP 38619 in the Northern Taranaki/Northland Basin. The water depth of the area is 361 feet (110 meters) about 25 miles (40 kilometers) off the Waikato coast and 58 miles (94 kilometers) southwest of central Auckland.
