Offshore Wells to Watch in 2019
Wood Mackenzie’s (WoodMac) Vice President of Global Exploration, Andrew Latham, has singled out five conventional offshore wells to watch in 2019.
These five wells comprise:
- Peroba
- Brulpadda-1
- Nour-1
- Kingsholm-1
- Jethro
Estimated to hold in-place volumes of more than five billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe), Peroba is a pre-salt prospect in Brazil’s Santos basin. If the well is successful, partners Petrobras, BP and CNODC are “likely to be sitting on a very significant find,” according to WoodMac.
Brulpadda-1 is located in South Africa’s frontier Outeniqua basin. Total operates the well, which is described by WoodMac as “potentially play-opening”. Prospect volumes are estimated at around one billion boe.
Nour-1, in Egypt’s Nile Delta, is currently drilling. Nour’s resource is estimated to be about 860 million boe. Kingsholm-1 is located in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico’s Mississippi Canyon area. The prospect is high-pressure, high-temperature and holds an estimated 300 million boe of resource. The Jethro prospect is situated on the Orinduik Block, offshore Guyana. The well will target a 200 million boe prospect.
Last year saw three “giant” offshore finds, according to WoodMac. These comprise Novatek’s 11.3 trillion cubic feet North Obskoye gas find offshore Russia, the Calypso gas discovery offshore Cyprus and Guyana’s offshore Hammerhead find.
WoodMac is an energy research and consultancy company. Latham has over 25 years of experience in technical and commercial aspects of exploration, according to the company’s website. He began his career as a geologist with Ranger Oil.
