McDermott Partners with Malaysian Training Agency
McDermott and Malaysia’s TAS Institute of Oil and Gas (TAS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in research and development, training, capacity building, and institutional development.
TAS is the first integrated oil and gas training institute in Sabah, Malaysia, while McDermott is the first large multinational energy service provider to partner with a local training organization in the Sabah region.
McDermott said in a news release that the collaboration with TAS seeks to upskill the local workforce and enhance institutional capabilities, targeting to position Sabah as a strategic hub for energy projects in Southeast Asia.
The initiative was facilitated by LANDAS Gemliang, an industry provider of electrical instrumentation solutions in the region and an existing TAS partner. It was formalized at the opening ceremony of the 11th edition of the Sabah Oil, Gas and Energy Conference and Exhibition, according to the release.
"This is an important collaboration as we continue to grow our portfolio in Malaysia," Mahesh Swaminathan, McDermott Senior Vice President for Subsea and Floating Facilities, said. "Working together, we will increase access to critical engineering resources to support the delivery of energy projects in the region. It also reflects our ongoing commitment towards institutional development and knowledge transfer, for a lasting positive impact on the country's energy sector”.

Green Hydrogen and Ammonia ECI Agreement
Meanwhile, McDermott was awarded an early contractor involvement (ECI) agreement from Abraxas Power Corporation for the Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) project located in Central Newfoundland, Canada.
According to an earlier news release, the project represents Canada's first commercial green hydrogen and ammonia production facility and will include the development of up to a 530-turbine wind farm with the ability to generate 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity and 150 megawatts (MW) of solar photovoltaic (PV). The facility will have the capacity to produce 165 kilotons per annum (kta) of hydrogen and 5000 metric tons per day of ammonia.
"The agreement is testament to McDermott's industry-leading delivery and installation expertise, and the breadth of our capabilities across the energy transition," Rob Shaul, McDermott Senior Vice President for Low Carbon Solutions, said. "Our century of experience, from concept to completion, and integrated delivery model, means we can offer Abraxas a repeatable modular implementation solution that is expected to drive cost savings, reduce risk and provide quality assurance”.
Under the scope of the agreement, McDermott will provide front-end engineering design (FEED), engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) execution planning services, and open book EPC cost estimates for the hydrogen production, ammonia processing, and product storage portion of the project.
McDermott describes itself as a premier, fully-integrated provider of engineering and construction solutions to the energy industry.
