Kuwait Megaproject Hits Utility Milestone
The FDH JV joint venture comprising Fluor Corp., Daewoo Engineering & Construction and Hyundai Heavy Industries has successfully generated first steam into Kuwait National Petroleum Co.’s (KNPC) Clean Fuels Project in Kuwait, Fluor reported Thursday.
“This significant milestone marks the completion and turnover of the first utility units by the Fluor-led joint venture and KNPC is advancing these units into operation with our ongoing support,” Al Collins, president of Fluor’s Energy & Chemicals business in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, said in a company statement. “The 12,000-plus craft workers at site have been backed by joint venture project team members across three continents, a global operation for a mega-sized project.”
Under its Clean Fuels Project, KNPC will retire existing processing facilities at its Shuaiba refinery and upgrade and expand its Mina Al Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah refineries. Fluor noted that the project will integrate the Mina Al Ahmadi and Mina Abdullahrefining system into one complex with full conversion operation. According to KNPC, the combined Euro-4-compliant facility will boast 800,000 barrels per day of refining capacity.
FDH is handling engineering, procurement, construction, pre-commissioning and testing for part of the work on Mina Abdullah.
