Hess has been ranked as the top oil and gas company on Corporate Responsibility magazine’s 2019 100 Best Corporate Citizen’s list.

The independent energy business earned 30th place in the rankings, which recognize outstanding environmental, social and governance (ESG) transparency and performance among the 1,000 largest U.S. public companies.

Hess has been named in the list in each of the last 12 years. The company moved up ten places from last year’s ranking in 2019.

“We see sustainability as fundamental to our long-term strategy and performance, supporting our purpose to be the world’s most trusted energy partner,” John Hess, Hess CEO, said in a company statement.

“We are proud to once again be recognized for the quality of our environmental, social and governance performance and disclosure,” he added.

ConocoPhillips was also included in the 2019 list, ranking in 55th place, as was Sempra Energy, which earned 66th place. Owens Corning ranked in first place in this year’s Best Corporate Citizens list. Intel Corp and General Mills Inc placed second and third, respectively.

According to its website, Hess is a leading shale oil and gas producer, one of the largest producers in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico and a key natural gas producer and supplier to Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand. The company, which is headquartered in New York, traces its roots back to 1933.

The 100 Best Corporate Citizens list ranks the entire Russell 1000 Index on 134 (98 factors and 36 subfactors) ESG factors. ISS-ESG, the responsible investment research arm of Institutional Shareholder Services, conducts the research.

To compile the ranking, information is obtained from publicly available resources only, rather than questionnaires or company submissions. There are seven pillars in the ranking; climate change, employee relations, environment, financial, governance, human rights and stakeholders and society.
