Freeport-McMoRan Hires Rowan Jackup for GOM Work
Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has hired a Rowan jackup for a one-well contract in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, according to Rowan Companies’ fleet report which was released Oct. 18.
FCX will be using the Rowan EXL III for one well for an undisclosed amount of money. The Rowan EXL III is scheduled to begin work in late October.
According to Rowan’s fleet report, the rig has been idle since the middle of August and went on rate with FCX in early October while waiting on the weather to move.
In August 2017, Rigzone reported that Rowan was laying off 85 workers beginning Oct. 1, 2017 who were assigned to the Rowan EXL III at the time. The company specified it was due to the termination of a drilling contract by the customer. At the time, the rig was working for Arena Offshore in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico near Lake Charles, Louisiana.
