Forties Pipeline System Crack 'Stabilized'
The small hairline crack in the Forties Pipeline System (FPS) at Red Moss, south of Aberdeen, has stabilized, Ineos confirmed in a company statement Thursday.
“Continued assessment of the pipeline since Monday has confirmed that the hairline crack has stabilized and no further growth has been recorded for 48 hours,” Ineos stated on its website.
“As a consequence, this morning we have been able to reduce the precautionary safety cordon from 300 metres down to 150 metres. This means the five residencies originally located within this area are now no longer within the cordon,” Ineos added.
A ‘number’ of repair options are currently being assessed and developed, according to Ineos, which said it was still too early to say how long the repair will take to complete. The company did admit, however, that repair work was expected to last for a matter of weeks rather than days.
“We can confirm that formal Force Majeure has been declared on relevant contracts and we continue to work closely with our customers during this period, as well as local communities, Government and other stakeholders,” Ineos said in a company statement.
“We apologize to our customers and the local community for the issues that this creates and we are working hard to minimize the impact of the pipeline closure as far as possible,” Ineos added.
A controlled shutdown of the FPS was implemented on December 11.
Earlier this week it was revealed that independent oil and gas firms EnQuest plc and Premier Oil plc could lose millions of dollars in the event of a prolonged shut down of the FPS.
