Cuadrilla Starts UK Fracking
Cuadrilla has started hydraulic fracturing operations at its Preston New Road shale gas exploration site, located in the UK, a company spokesperson has confirmed.
Cuadrilla has two horizontal shale gas exploration wells at the site. Fracking of both wells is expected to last three months, the spokesperson told Rigzone, after which “the flow rate of the gas will be tested.”
Commenting on the start of Cuadrilla’s fracking operations at Preston New Road, industry body UK Onshore Oil and Gas said it was “excellent news for the company and the country.”
A last minute request for an interim injunction to prevent fracking operations from starting at Preston New Road was dismissed at the High Court in London on October 12.
Last month, Cuadrilla received hydraulic fracturing consent from the UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy for its second horizontal shale exploration well at Preston New Road. Consent was granted for the first horizontal well in July this year.
Cuadrilla currently has eight sites, including Preston New Road, in its Lancashire Bowland shale gas exploration license area, according to its website. The company states on its website that it believes “at least” 200 trillion cubic feet of natural gas is trapped in the shale rock in its license area.
Formed in the UK in 2007, Cuadrilla is a privately-owned British exploration and production company focused on discovering and recovering natural resources, primarily natural gas, from shale rock. The company is headquartered in Bamber Bridge, Lancashire.
