BLOG: How Confident Are North Sea Workers About Their Employment?
Rigzone outlines employment confidence levels among North Sea oil and gas workers.

North Sea oil and gas workers are not confident of keeping their jobs over the next 12 months, despite stating that they think the worst is behind the North Sea oil and gas sector, according to a Rigzone survey.

A whopping 44 percent of the 59 survey respondents said they weren’t confident of hanging onto their employment in 2018, with 18.64 percent stating that they were extremely unconfident. In contrast, just over a quarter of participants (28.81 percent) said they were confident of keeping their jobs over the course of the year, and 8.47 percent said they were extremely confident.

More than half of respondents (52.54 percent) said they thought the worst was now behind in the North Sea oil and gas sector.

If Oil & Gas UK’s 2017 workforce report is anything to go by, the respondents who revealed concern at keeping their employment over the next 12 months may have a point.

The industry body’s latest figures show there’s been a significant drop in employment in the North Sea over the last few years. In 2016, 34,170 workers were employed within the southern, central and northern North Sea, according to Oil & Gas UK, which marked a drop of 25.57 percent compared to 2014, when 45,913 workers were employed within the same regions.

That being said, quite a few positive news stories concerning the North Sea oil and gas employment sector emerged in 2017.

For example, just in November alone, several oil and gas firms operating in the North Sea outlined their intentions to grow.

The newly launched FOS Group said it was looking to create over 100 new jobs, John Bell Pipeline Equipment Company Limited also revealed plans to bolster its workforce, and Well-Safe Solutions confirmed that it plans to grow its workforce to 400 people within the next three years.

If this trend continues into 2018, North Sea oil and gas workers may become more confident about their employment prospects for the near future.
