Salary range for an NDT technician in offshore operations?

Published By Rigzone

At-a-Glance: Offshore NDT Technician compensation is primarily day-rate based for 12-hour tours. Typical offshore day rates (USD): Entry $330–$450; Mid-Career $480–$690; Senior $720–$1,110.

Experience Level Typical Offshore Day Rate (USD)
Entry (0–2 yrs; Level I–early Level II) $330–$450
Mid-Career (3–7 yrs; solid Level II, common methods) $480–$690
Senior (8+ yrs; Level III or advanced PAUT/TOFD/rope access) $720–$1,110

I. Pay Breakdown

Assumptions & formulas (offshore-only): 12-hour tours; annualization uses a common 14/14 rotation of 182.5 offshore days per year. Formulas: \( \text{Day Rate} \approx \text{Hourly} \times 12 \) and \( \text{Annualized} \approx \text{Day Rate} \times 182.5 \).

Level Hourly (USD) Day Rate (12-hr) (USD) Annualized at 14/14 (USD)
Entry $27.50–$37.50 $330–$450 $60,000–$82,500
Mid-Career $40.00–$57.50 $480–$690 $87,500–$127,500
Senior $60.00–$92.50 $720–$1,110 $132,500–$202,500

I.1 Percentile view (offshore day rate ? annualized)

  • Entry: 25th $330 ? $60,000; 50th $390 ? $72,500; 75th $450 ? $82,500
  • Mid-Career: 25th $480 ? $87,500; 50th $600 ? $110,000; 75th $690 ? $127,500
  • Senior: 25th $720 ? $132,500; 50th $900 ? $165,000; 75th $1,110 ? $202,500

Notes: Figures reflect offshore assignments only and exclude onshore rates. Actual annual take-home varies with rotation, weather delays, and project utilization.

II. How Pay Changes

II.1 Experience

  • Progression from Level I to Level II typically moves an NDT tech from the lower $330–$450 day-rate band into the $480–$690 band.
  • Senior techs with 8+ years, method lead responsibilities, or Level III certification reach $720–$1,110, especially on critical path scopes.

II.2 Training/certifications

  • Core method tickets (ASNT/ISO Level II in MT, PT, UT, RT): unlock mid-band rates.
  • Advanced techniques (PAUT, TOFD, AUT, corrosion mapping): often add $50–$200 to the day rate depending on scope complexity.
  • Rope Access (IRATA/SPRAT, esp. Level II/III): common offshore uplift; can move a tech from the mid to upper band on hulls, risers, flare stacks, and legs.
  • Offshore survival (BOSIET/FOET + HUET) & medical/OPITO: required; current tickets keep you deployable and prevent rate erosion.
  • Radiography cards (RT with RSO knowledge) and radiation safety: command higher day rates on RT campaigns.

II.3 Added responsibilities

  • Lead/crew supervision, procedure writing, client interface: pushes into the senior band.
  • Night shift, holiday, or last-minute mobilization: typical uplifts of 5%–20% or flat bonuses.
  • Multi-ticket utility (e.g., PAUT + rope access + MT/PT): increases utilization and rate leverage on integrated campaigns.

III. Market Drivers Affecting Pay for THIS Role

  • Rig count and inspection backlog: Higher offshore activity in the Gulf of Mexico, North Sea, West Africa, and the Middle East tightens availability of certified techs, lifting rates.
  • Integrity cycles and aging assets: Turnarounds, life-extension, and SPS/drydocking windows create spikes in demand for PAUT/TOFD and rope access NDT teams.
  • Specialty method scarcity: Limited supply of competent PAUT rope access teams or Level III oversight drives the $900–$1,110 day-rate outcomes.
  • Bonus practices offshore: Safety, completion, and retention bonuses are common; travel and standby terms can materially affect effective pay.
  • Regional differentials: Harsh-environment or remote offshore (e.g., North Sea winter, deepwater floaters) typically pay toward the 75th percentile.

IV. Entry Pathways

  • Apprentice/trainee NDT tech: Start on MT/PT, progress to UT/RT, then mobilize offshore once tickets and sea survival are in place.
  • Transition from fabrication/QA roles: Weld inspection background can accelerate UT/PAUT proficiency for offshore scopes.
  • Military/aviation NDT crossover: Convert method certifications and complete offshore survival to enter offshore campaigns.
  • Rope access add-on: Gaining IRATA Level I–III plus NDT makes you deployable for rope access inspection packages.
