A 50 Hz, 60 Hz voltage-source converter (VSC) usually applies a PWM control and is based on IGBTs or similar devices, with controlled turn-on and turn-off. Then you'd be able to operate at any power factor, inductive or capacitive, within the overall thermal capability of the inverter. The reactive power control is related to the ability of adjusting the phase shift between voltages and currents. Bulk Power is transmitted through long High Voltage DC Transmission line. Since DC Distribution voltage will have to be same as the DC generation voltage as DC voltage can not be stepped Up or Down, DC has very limited application for urban or rural Distribution power system.
