Formed in 1963, the Department of Geology and Geophysics is a vibrant and important force at the University of Calgary. As of Fall, 2000, there are about 300 undergraduates in five different programs, and about 120 students in graduate programs. The Department offers the following degrees in geology, geophysics and hydrology: Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science Honours, Master of Science (Thesis Based), Master of Science (Course Based), and Doctor of Philosophy. Also offered jointly with other Faculties are undergraduate degress in Earth Science and Environmental Science. The Department enjoys close ties with the local energy industry, Calgary hosts most energy company head offices for Canada. The labs and offices of the Provincail and Federal governments are also close by.
