New South Wales is the largest state in Australia, both in terms of population and economic significance. The value of production of the New South Wales mining industry is over $6 billion per year. The industry employs about 14 000 people and is the state's biggest export earner. New South Wales also has a well developed minerals processing sector, producing iron and steel, aluminium and base metals for domestic and export markets. The Department of Mineral Resources is responsible for administering exploration and mining in the state.
