BHP Petroleum is one of the three main businesses of the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, one of Australia's largest listed public companies, and one of the world's major diversified resources groups.
BHP Petroleum's international asset base includes major producing assets in Australasia and the UK, offshore production in the Gulf of Mexico and production in Bolivia. Production is sourced from four countries. In Bass Strait, Australia, BHP Petroleum and its joint venture participant, Esso Australia, produce about 200 000 barrels of oil and 550 million cubic feet of gas a day from the offshore Gippsland Basin. Esso is the operator of Bass Strait.
