Atwood Oceanics, Inc. and subsidiaries ("the Company") are engaged in the business of international offshore drilling, and related support, management and consulting services. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, USA, Atwood Oceanics was incorporated as a Texas corporation in 1968, commenced its first drilling operations offshore Brunei in Southeast Asia in 1970 and made its first public offering in 1972. Atwood Oceanics has conducted drilling operations in most of the major offshore exploration areas of the world: Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Australia, East and West Africa, Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, India, Mediterranean Sea, Central and South America and the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The Company currently supports its operations from its Houston headquarters and affiliated offices in Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, United Kingdom, Egypt, Israel and India.
Currently, the Company's fleet consists of eight wholly-owned drilling units, including three third-generation semisubmersibles, one second generation semisubmersible, one second-generation semisubmersible self-erecting tender-assist rig, one 300 ft. cantilever jackup, one submersible and one modular self-contained platform rig. The Company also owns a fifty percent interest in a platform rig with Helmerich & Payne, Inc. (current owner of 22 percent of the Company's outstanding common stock) as the other fifty percent owner. In addition to the owned rigs, the Company manages the operations of two operator-owned platform rigs offshore northwest Australia.
During it's thirty year history, the majority of the Company's drilling units have operated outside of the United States. The Company has a modern, "state-of-the-art" fleet, with virtually all drilling units acquired or upgraded in the 1990's.
