Fishing is the process of removing lost or stuck equipment in a wellbore. This can happen if a drillstring breaks and falls to the bottom of the wellbore, a drill bit breaks, or even if a pipe or tool falls from the rig floor to the bottom of the well. Fishing operations can take several days to complete, and during this time, drilling cannot occur.
