Harvesting an abundance of oil and natural gas resources, the Middle East supplies nearly half of all exports to the global oil market. Middle Eastern countries Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are all members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which pumps roughly 40% of the world's oil, with Saudi Arabia leading the pack for the greatest amount of output. OPEC's crude oil production was 28.7 million barrels per day in the first half of 2009.
The Chief Mate, or Chief Officer, is a licenced crew member that is second in command of the vessel. The Chief Mate or Officer reports directly to the Captain and is responsible for the Deck Department and Cargo along with commanding all of the crew in those departments. The Chief Mate or Officer holds the same rank as First Mate or Officer and a crew will usually only have one or the other. Below Chief/First Mate or Officer will be Second Mate/Officer, Third Mate Officer, and so on depending on the size of the vessel.
