Overview / Responsibilities

Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & nfrastructure is currently seeking a Junior Geotechnical Engineer to become an integral part of our Engineered Construction team to work with and be mentored by our professional engineers. Familiarity with State and local standards, policies and procedures and a good working knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO and DOT specifications is a plus. Typical projects include commercial development sites, energy generation facilities, institutional / educational buildings, and roadways / infrastructure.


Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate construction materials test projects and direct engineering technicians
  • Perform field investigations
  • Classify soil and oversee laboratory testing
  • Prepare field reports, calibration documentation, reports of geotechnical exploration, and review laboratory test results
  • Work with a team of engineers and technicians
  • Support other design projects
  • Field work will be required on a regular basis (approximate 60% office and 40% field work)
  • Work area is primarily Western North Carolina, however some travel may be required, including airline travel
  • Follow company safety standards and construction site safety standards
  • Physical demands include visits to construction sites to observe / inspect work, and lifting of materials specimens in the field and lab
  • Communication with project owners and contractors in the field

Skills / Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology, with Construction Option a plus
  • Must have the capacity to conduct work independently with minimal supervision and oversight
  • Must work well in a team environment, with abilities to multi-task and handle various assignments at once
  • Must have good technical comprehension of construction materials and their application, including soils, concrete, and steel
  • Possess good analytical, verbal, and written communication skills


  • Experience preparing construction drawings using MicroStation and / or AutoCAD Civil 3D is a plus
  • Experience using ArcGIS is a plus
  • Current or previous industry certifications (ACI, ICC or NICET) is a plus
